Meet Your Coaches

Who are these awesome people?

Everyday you sign into class and spend 60 well-fought minutes with some pretty terrific people. Ever wonder who they really are? Where are they from? And how did they get to be so awesome?

I thought it’d be cool to tell you a little bit about the coaches that you sweat with every day. They truly care about you and about the skills that they teach you each day. They push you, they praise you and they make you better than yesterday. Enjoy getting to know them better… I’d like to introduce, Coach Lori.

CFH: How long have you been with CrossFit Hixson? I have been with CFH since it was just a twinkle in Amber’s eye. I remember one day, sitting at Starbucks with her and she told me that she was going to quit her job(s) and open a CrossFit Gym. She showed me her CrossFit notebook and how she was studying to take her Level 1. Now mind you, we had only been Crossfitting together for about a month. I thought she was (a little) crazy, but I knew that once she set her mind to something, all I could do was help, support and encourage her. And look where she is now :-)!!

IMG_5155

CFH: What did you do before CrossFit Hixson? Where did you work? What did you do for exercise? How did you find out about CrossFit Hixson etc?
In High School, College and even after I played soccer. I also ran, but I have never been one of those people who REALLY enjoyed running. I ran because it was good exercise and I trained for a few half marathons, but I suffered through several over-use injuries training for long distances. That’s how I ended up at the SportsBarn: My doctor told me to take a break from running, so I needed SOMETHING to do and I was allowed to use a bike and elliptical during my re-hab. Amber and I met when my youngest (Ryan) and her middle (Haley) started Kindergarten together – about six years ago (Fall 2009). The two of us started out running together with some other women. We also played on a women’s soccer team together. During the winter of 2011/2012, the weather was crummy and we tried a few workouts on the SportsBarn floor. I am not quite sure when Amber told me they were “CrossFit” workouts. I just know she searched her phone every day (a/k/a “mainsite”) and found something
she liked and we did it. She challenged me to give it 8 weeks and see if I didn’t like it better than my (then) current program of running mixed with powerflex classes. I guess you can figure out what I thought about her “CrossFit Challenge”

CFH: What is your favorite exercise? Hmm. This is hard and I don’t know that I have one favorite. I like Handstand push-ups, a SMALL amount of running, sit-ups and squatting.

IMG_5430

CFH: How ofter do you workout? In a perfect world, I would work out 5-6 times a week and I feel better when I can. However, working a few part-time jobs and having 4 active children make this difficult. I love it, though, an if I didn’t, it would be hard to “make myself” come. Instead, I hate it when my other obligations get in the way – my CrossFit Family is amazing!

CFH: Is there something or someone that has inspired your fitness journey? I love watching the CrossFit Games and seeing people of all shapes/sizes/ages compete and truly be strong. A CrossFit athlete is a well-rounded ATHLETE, not just a good runner, swimmer, biker, etc. Our sport also challenges us to work to improve our weaknesses, and I have a bunch! We also have several inspiring athletes at CrossFit Hixson and coaching them and working out alongside them pushes me to be better! I am thrilled that my girls enjoy it as well and love that we can talk about our workouts and they know all the movements and how hard something can be. They (along with my non-crossfitting boys) push me to work hard so that I can keep up with them in their activities. I can kick around a soccer ball, play basketball, pitch to Ryan and swing a golf club, among many other things.

DSC_0394

CFH: Are you married? Kids? Animals? Yes, married to Michael for 21 years with 4 children: Brendan (18) is a Freshman at Alabama, Meagan (16) is a junior at Notre Dame High School, Sarah (13) is an 8th grader at St. Jude and Ryan (11) is a 6th grader, also at St. Jude. My girls also participate in CrossFit. It has made them faster, fitter, stronger and more competitive which has transferred well into their sports. I can’t tell you how many times people have told me how strong Meagan and Sarah look…. One parent said that Meagan’s kicks (in soccer) look so effortless and that they are strong. I just smile and say, “It’s CrossFit.” It gives them confidence and makes me so proud. I also have 2 dogs: Kona and Indy.

04212015003905-IMG_2101

CFH: Why do you think CrossFit is better than any other program of the same kind of format? I like that it is constantly varied. I got so burnt out in my Group Fitness classes, because I felt like we always did the same thing. I also got bored running. I like that I never know what we are going to do each day and whatever it is, it will make me stronger and challenge me. It is also a great experience to coach adults and teens and see that look of pride when they do something they thought impossible: make it through a WOD, PR a lift, get that first pull-up or handstand, you name it! I get such joy from seeing the satisfaction (and sometimes the look of surprise) on their faces.

IMG_3808

CFH: What is your favorite food? Again – pick just one? I guess Pizza… I love lots of foods though!

CFH: What is your hobby outside of exercise? I don’t have time for any other hobbies. I love watching my kids play sports and I love that they are active. If I had time, I would play golf more, but it just takes so long and you really need to practice – who has time for that?

DSC03999

CFH: What else do you want to tell me? I love CrossFit Hixson. It is amazing to watch all of our athletes work hard and improve each and every time they come in. Jason and Amber have done an amazing job building the community here and it is fun for me to me just a tiny part of it.

Enjoy getting to know them better… I’d like to introduce, Coach Amber.

CFH: How long have you been with CrossFit Hixson?

A: I started CFH after going to a class at Get Built. I loved it! It was electric and sooo much fun! Jason I weren’t able to be members of a box b/c they didn’t have childcare. After some creative thinking and convincing Jason this was what we should do CFH was born!

Amber5
CFH: What did you do before CrossFit?

A: Everything. I have been a personal trainer, General Manager of a gym, folded towels and taught all group exercise classes. When I would workout I would only pick and choose the CrossFit workouts I liked and was good at. Once I got serious about it then I started to work on learning the technique and the movements.

CFH: What is your favorite exercise?

A: Anything with heavy barbell work.

Amber6
CFH: How often do you workout?

A: 5-6 days / week. Whenever I can. Jason and I try to flip flop coaching so we can both workout with a class.

CFH: Is there something or someone that has inspired your fitness journey?

A: I have played sports my whole life. I loved college and my classes were awesome, learning about the body while taking soccer, track, swimming and other fun sport classes. As I got out of school I worked in a gym so working out was already ingrained in me. My parents nor siblings exercise. They think I am odd. There isn’t a “thing or person” that inspired me, I think I might have ADD so I need to keep moving(must be where Caroline gets it). Yet, as I get older I find my children inspire me. I want to be able to do anything they want to do, run/bike/swim/etc. Not only that I want to be an example of a healthy woman for my girls.

Amber2

CFH: What is something that few people know about you?
A: I am the softie and Jason is the hard ass.

Amber7

CFH: Are you married? Kids? Animals?

A: Everyone in the gym knows/has met my children they are at the gym just as much as me!

Amber2

CFH: Why do you think CrossFit is better than any other program of the same kind of format?

A: It is measurable, repeatable and doable for all ability levels. Anyone can do CrossFit. Anyone can test to see if they are fitter, faster or stronger to determine if their program is working. This quantifiable data is what proves CrossFit’s effectiveness. CrossFit is something I can do with my whole family. My favorite is to do a workout with all 5 of us!

CFH: What is your favorite food?

A: I’m not picky so I like anything. The best is when I don’t have to cook or clean it up!

Amber1

CFH: What is your hobby outside of exercise?

A: I don’t have any b/c I own a gym!!! I do love to read and cross stitch but haven’t had time lately to do those things.

Amber4

CFH: Anything else you want to share?
My goal opening CFH was to share my knowledge and passion about fitness with others. Most importantly to be a strong, fit, empowered woman for my 3 girls. I want to be an example of hardwork, sacrifice and compassion for them. I want them to look at my body and see the bruises from cleans, scars from box jumps and calluses from pull ups. All these things could stop me from trying again or seen as imperfections but the goal is for my girls to view these as an opportunity to become stronger, better and to become a rockin’ healthy mom!

They push you, they praise you and they make you better than yesterday. Enjoy getting to know them better… I’d like to introduce Jason Reeves.

Jason4

CFH: How long have you been with CrossFit Hixson?

J: I own it, it is our 4th child.

CFH: What did you do before CrossFit?

J: I did traditional gym workouts, with an emphasis on the powerlifting, bench, squats, and deadlifts with some “cardio” thrown in. While trying to find the perfect combination I found CrossFit while I was attending my last academy and haven’t looked back since.

Jason6

CFH: What is your favorite exercise?

J: Anything with heavy barbell work.

CFH: How often do you workout?

J: 5-6 days / week. Whenever my wife lets me.

Jason5

CFH: Is there something or someone that has inspired your fitness journey?

J: I have always felt that my body was just a means to get things done. It was never about ascetics. I’ve always had a drive to be an asset and contribute to my team. Whether it was on the football field, battle field, or my current field. My number one goal is to help out my team and make sure they all go home safely.

CFH: What is something that few people know about you?
J: I used to be a woman.

Jason3

CFH: Are you married? Kids? Animals?

J: Most of you already know I’m married to my girlfriend/baby momma and we have 3 awesome girls.

Jason7 Jason2

CFH: Why do you think CrossFit is better than any other program of the same kind of format?

J: It works and its real life. I’m often reminded that real life happens without notice and there’s no getting ready. You’re either ready for whatever life throws at you or you’re not. It also forces you to push yourself mentally and to overcome any demons in your head telling you to just quit. And the community at CFH is amazing.

CFH: What is your favorite food?

J: Whatever my wife makes and anything baked, grilled, pasta, or smothered in gravy.

CFH: What is your hobby outside of exercise?

J: I’m a father, fix all stuff my that wife and kids break and own a box so no other hobbies.

Jason1CFH: Anything else you want to share?

I’d like to share this: Donnie Baker is my spirit animal

LB_head

CFH: How long have you been with CrossFit Hixson?

LB: Almost since day one, 2012. If I wasn’t in the first on-ramp, I was in the second session. Oh, the memories of being in that tiny space!

CFH: What did you do before CrossFit Hixson? Where did you work? What did you do for exercise? How did you find out about CrossFit Hixson etc?

LB: Most of my professional career has been spent in advertising/design working as a designer. For the last few years, I’ve worked for myself dividing my time between both design and fitness. Odd combination but it’s truly great to be able to do both. Before CrossFit I was following a body-building style training plan which meant single-joint, isolation exercises like bicep curls and leg extensions, blah, blah, blah. Boring. And I was bored. I was searching for something new. I had heard of CrossFit a few years before but didn’t really know what it was or meant. Needless to say, I was excited to hear CFH was moving into a space at Sportsbarn.

LB_lift

CFH: What is your favorite exercise?

LB: That’s actually a tough question. Like asking, “So, what kind of bacon do you like?” Body weight movements will always be a favorite. They’re foundational and essential to being able to function in life. [yes, that includes burpees!] But, in the beginning of my weight-lifting career — bench press. Perhaps an odd thing for a woman to say but I started lifting weights at 19…, uh hmmm, a while ago and women just didn’t lift weights then. Or if they did, they were pink. Enuff said. In those early days, bench press made me feel confident and strong. Feeling strong is great! Today, while I still love to bench, I look forward to dead lifts, jerks, kettlebell, rope climbs. I even like the stuff I can’t really do. Every WOD is an opportunity.

CFH: How often do you workout?

LB: 5-6 days / week. A major training lesson I’ve learned, and continue to gain knowledge of, is that RECOVERY is critical to training success and is part of the work. Skipping recovery is like skipping leg day. Don’t do that.

CFH: Is there something or someone that has inspired your fitness journey?

LB: In retrospect the fact that my father took an interest in playing with me at a very young age made all the difference in me adopting an active lifestyle. When I showed an interest in throwing and catching, that’s all it took. We spent a lot of time outside moving. Soon I was doing it on my own. Shooting baskets, running, hitting the ball against the house. [and breaking a few windows!] He never put any expectations on me about what girls can/can’t or should/shouldn’t do versus what boys can do. He only said that if I wanted, I could. And that if I really wanted, and put in the work, I could be really good. [I should probably go call him]

LB_UTCbb LB_Tball

CFH: What is something that few people know about you?

LB: Now that the modeling school thing is outta the bag… I’VE NEVER WATCHED THE MOVIE STAR WARS.

CFH: Are you married? Kids? Animals?

LB: Not married but I do have a partner, Jeanne. Animals? Alas, there are three cats at my house. We’ve learned to live with each other although we continually disagree about what surfaces are approved for sleeping.

LB_kid LB_SrPic

CFH: Why do you think CrossFit is better than any other program of the same kind of format?

LB: There are so many fitness options today. Many have elements of CF but none put them together. None change people in a sustainable and significant way. True fact: You can find awful people everywhere. But you can always count on finding good people at a CrossFit box.

* Combines sport with fitness
* Utilizes benchmarks to gauge progress
* Functional movement [useful, transferable movement]
* Nutrition, not weight-loss
* Creates community
* Brings people together who give a sh*t
* Hands-on, skilled coaching
* Scalable across skill-level, age, physical constraints
* Powerful, Life-changing
* Sense of accomplishment/Fun

CFH: What is your favorite food?

LB: Fresh! Oysters, squid, bison. And, of course, bacon and chocolate cake. Not necessarily together but I’m open-minded.

LB_carpet

CFH: What is your hobby outside of exercise?

LB: Reading for information. I love learning about different topics whether it’s a “how-to”, trivia, history or a biography.

Lauren4   Lauren7

CFH: How long have you been with CrossFit Hixson?
LA: I started with CFH in September of 2012. Greg had been telling me for quite some time to come back and try it. I popped my head in one day and thought I’ll try it gave Amber a call and was there the next day.

 Lauren2

CFH: What did you do before CrossFit Hixson? Where did you work? What did you do for exercise? How did you find out about CrossFit Hixson etc?
LA: Before CFH I had been doing CrossFit on my own for a couple years at the SportsBarn. In high school and middle school I was a cheerleader and they had us doing tons of running and gymnastics. (I started gymnastics when I was 4 and never really stopped.) I also played softball, soccer, volleyball, and ran cross country/track. I have always been pretty active. My parents made sure I had plenty to do… They didn’t want me to get a hold of my other eyebrow. I love my fun job of coaching at CFH but I do have a day job as well. I work as a hairstylist at Salon 30A. I have been there for almost 8 years.

Lauren1

CFH: What is your favorite exercise?
LA: I really love all the gymnastic moves. I love handstand pushups and am starting to love handstand walks! Deadlift is probably my favorite lift. I really loved lifting heavy before my back injury last year and miss it terribly!

CFH: How often do you workout?
LA: I workout 5 days a weeks most of the time. It is my sanity hour. I love working out along side of everyone at the box.

CFH: Is there something or someone that has inspired your fitness journey?
LA: I don’t think there is someone or something specifically that inspired me to start with other than I had kind of become a little bit of a chubby bunny and didn’t like that. I can say now though that everyone at the box inspires me. Seeing everyone work hard and fight for every rep really makes me work hard and show up the next day for more.

CFH: What is something that few people know about you?
LA: I am a pretty open book for the most part… It was very hard to come up with clues for this! I grew up around small airplanes because my father and grandfather are both pilots. My granddad would fly me as a baby from Eufaula, Alabama to his house so my parents didn’t have to drive with a small child in the car. I was always better in the air than on land. Growing up in the south everyone around me hunted but I never had family members that did so I never hunted! I think I did kill the deer that hit my car recently though does that one count?

Lauren3

CFH: Are you married? Kids? Animals?
LA: I am not married and no kids. But I do have an awesome pitbull mix named Luna. She is such a sweetie and so much fun.

CFH: Why do you think CrossFit is better than any other program of the same kind of format?
LA: CrossFit is so great for the constantly varied aspect that others don’t have in them. I love how you may have 5 days of leg stuff in a row and how that can prepare you for what life may throw at you. CrossFit is more than just a fitness program to me. It gave me such mental strength during my back injury to just keep fighting and keep going. Now, not being able to lift heavy weight at all, I love that anything in CrossFit can be scaled to fit anyone. Plus, what other fitness program gives you a whole other family you get to see everyday when you come in the box??? To me there is nothing that comes close to what CrossFit is and does for people.

Lauren5

CFH: What is your favorite food?
LA: I love Mexican food and pizza. I also love ice cream and beer. Oh yes and you can’t forget chocolate! I love food period. I will try just about anything and not much I don’t like.

CFH: What is your hobby outside of exercise?
LA: Well lately I have been spending most of my time at one of the two jobs. I am back in school for exercise science to go to PT school. I love to read and be outside.

Lauren6

CFH: What else do you want to tell me?
LA: I really hope I didn’t kill the deer that hit me… My babysitter growing up had a pet deer.

DSC_0151

CFH: How long have you been with CrossFit Hixson?
JS: I have been here since the gritty, cramped, beginning. I helped with the build out of the original box and did all the technology work. I remember the day Amber told me she was going to open a box – we were all WODding in the SportsBarn gym, pissing off all the old geezers when we dropped weight. Ah, the good ‘ol days.

Jeff-mullet cat5-23

CFH: What did you do before CFH? Where did you work? What did you do for exercise? How did you find out about CFH etc?
JS: From about 1992 until 2007 I was a pretty hard core mountain and road bike racer. I raced or did some kind of cycling related event almost every weekend. That ended in 2007 when my son was born. Just no longer had the time to do it. Before CFH I did CrossFit on my own in the SportsBarn with Greg Gamache. Not long after that some others Joined us, and Jason moved over to the SportsBarn from another gym and started working out with us at lunch. I started working out in 2007 after my son was born – I went for a physical to get life insurance and was shocked at the blood work results. It scared me into working out, so I started doing Body for Life. During that time I met Amber and Jason and Jason showed me CF. Been doing it ever since. Coaching at CFH isn’t my main job though – my career is as an electrical design engineer for Plantronics. I design and manufacture telephones for the hearing impaired by day.
CFH: What is your favorite exercise?
JS: Most of you would probably guess double-unders… Basically, I tend to favor technical movements and feats of skill over pure raw strength and power. That said, my favorite lift is the overhead squat, but I also love the snatch, and of course, double-unders! As far as strength is concerned, I favor shoulder movements, and I love presses, push press, jerks, and handstand push ups. When it comes to coaching exercises, again, I favor technical movements. I love coaching rowing, double-unders, the three squats, oly lifts, and I have a really good track record with muscle-ups.
CFH: How ofter do you workout?
JS: 3-5 days a week. I never work out on Saturdays and my intent is to do M-F although life often gets in the way of that plan!
CFH: Is there something or someone that has inspired your fitness journey?
JS: My children… I realized when I had that physical that I had to do something if I wanted to stay healthy enough to participate in my kids’ lives.
CFH: What is something that few people know about you?
JS: So many skeletons… so many… Well, lets see… My college buddies call me the Alumni Pledge because I pledged to my fraternity in my final quarter of my senior year of college. I became a Teke and immediately went into the Alumni. I have been a musician my whole life, and while I’m currently known as a banjo player, I played violin from grade 4-12, learned guitar as a teenager, taught myself drums as a teen, and studied 2 years in college as a music major in percussion before pursuing engineering. I was a member of a cover band that entire time as the drummer and remained so until I moved to Chattanooga in 2000. I can literally play any instrument with strings or that requires hitting it with a stick. If I have to blow air into it though, I’m lost.

Jeff-Nat1 Family

CFH: Are you married? Kids? Animals?
JS: I have been married to my wife Nathalie since 2003 and we have three crazy kids, Ian (8), Audrey (6), and Vivian (4). We have 2 dogs – a Schnauzer named Friday and a big furry mutt named Bacon.
CFH: Why do you think CrossFit is better than any other program of the same kind of format?
JS: I’m biased. Very much so. I have a lot of myself invested in this gym and its success, and I see it as a reflection of myself. That said, I am all in when it concerns CrossFit. For me, it’s the variety – constantly varied… the mantra that we coaches chant often, is what keeps me coming. I can honestly say that in 8 years of CrossFit, I have never once thought that I needed to try something different. I have never once thought that I didn’t want to go to the gym today because of monotony. I have to force myself to take rest days… Consistency is the key to success in anything and for me, “constantly varied” is the key. Infinite scalability is the other reason. Anyone can do CrossFit, because I can make an appropriate workout for ANYONE… Yeah, not everyone gets it and some have their own reasons, but if you give it an honest go, I can guarantee you’ll love it.
CFH: What is your favorite food?
JS: Yes. Ok, if I’m being honest… Bacon. No seriously, I named my dog Bacon… I’m a true omnivore, and a bit of a foodie. I love food and it shows… In the bad way of course. I also love high gravity beer and good bourbon…

Jeffjo1 Jeff2

CFH: What is your hobby outside of exercise?
JS: I don’t have A hobby… I have ALL hobbies. Seriously, ask my wife. I guarantee she will roll her eyes before she answers. I have been a woodworker since I was a boy and I love old hand tools. I am also an avid fly fisherman – I love to go to the Hiwassee on a Saturday morning for some trout fishing. Jason and I and some other non-CF friends do an annual guys fishing trip. I’m really into traditional wet shaving and have a large collection of straight razors that I have either made or restored (and until 6 months ago when I grew a beard, shaved with them daily). I also, as many of you have seen, play yoyo – that’s a fairly recent one. And, I’ll always be a musician at heart, so I love playing Banjo, Guitar, drums, whatever.
CFH: What else do you want to tell me?
JS: Besides coaching, I also do all of the technology work for the box – I maintain the website, Facebook page, Instagram, etc.
